Warren Kevin Hegg (born 23 February 1968 in Whitefield, Lancashire) is a famous English cricketer. He was a player in County Cricket for Lancashire. While he was primarily a wicket-keeper Hegg could also be a skilled lower-order batsman who scored numerous first-class hundred. He played for England for two times in Test games, but his career in international cricket was not as successful because England’s selectors chose Alec Stewart to act as an all-rounder. Hegg played for Lancashire during 19 of those years, and captaining them for three years between 2002 between 2002 and 2004. He left competitive cricket in the year 2005.

This season proved to be a disappointing one for Lancashire and the team being sent into the second division in the County Championship for the first time in its history even though they had started the season as favorite of the bookmarkers to win the tournament. The team was severely weakened due to injuries. At 8 bowlers not available and Hegg himself sustained two hamstring strains that caused him to miss a few games which included the final game of the season, which required the team to win in order to remain at the bottom of the league. After Lancashire’s demotion towards the end of 2004, Hegg stepped down as Lancashire captain. The team was replaced with the batsman Mark Chilton. Hegg stated of his captaincy stint “It has been a great honour but now the time is right to step down and concentrate on helping the team recapture its position in the first division”.

Hegg was named the county captain in 2002. Under his leadership, Lancashire finished third and second at the County Championship in 2002 and 2003, respectively.

Hegg made his debut in the first class with Lancashire in 1986 and stayed in the county throughout the rest of his career. In 1989, he set the Lancashire record by holding 11 catches in one match of a first-class match. The feat, which was achieved against Derbyshire was the fifth-highest number of misses during a match, by an wicket-keeper. One of his most memorable moments was on June 12, 1996, when he was playing with Lancashire in a match against Yorkshire in the semi-finals in the Benson & Hedges Cup. With a score of 251 in the final, Lancashire were 97/5 when Hegg came to the crease. He was surrounded by wickets but Hegg made 81 runs from the 62 balls he played to lead his county to victory . He took one wicket off the final ball of the game.

Hegg played in two Test matches in the 1998-1999 Ashes tour to Australia in which Alec Stewart was moved up the order in order to be an expert batsman. After Stewart’s departure out of the Winter tour to India at the end of 2001 Hegg returned to the England team for the tour, as well as for the one that was played following in New Zealand. Hegg did not play international cricket. He was second over the wicket-keeper who was younger, James Foster, on the tour.

On 15 May 2005, Hegg announced that 2005 would be his last year of cricket. Two weeks before the end of the 2005 season, a delivery from fast bowler James Anderson ricocheted off James Middlebrook’s stumps, dismissing him, and hit Hegg on the thumb. The freak accident forced Hegg’s season to end prematurely, and he finished with a total of 951 first-class dismissals, of which 919 were for Lancashire, just six short of George Duckworth’s Lancashire record of 925.
