Warren Aspinall (born 13 September 1967) is an English former footballer who was forward or midfielder during the Football League, most notably for Portsmouth and Carlisle United. His career began with his hometown club Wigan Athletic which earned him an excellent reputation for his goalscoring abilities early on and then securing a transfer to First Division club Everton, being transferred again the club to Wigan until the closing to the football season. Then he moved to Aston Villa for a club record sum of P315,000 and helped the club return to the top of English football. He then signed for Portsmouth for a club record cost of. He played more than 150 games in all competitions with Pompey and later moved to Bournemouth following a loan period at the club as well as Swansea City. With a limited number of chances in Bournemouth and scoring just eight goals in just 28 league matches, Aspinall signed for Carlisle United as a free-of- cost transfer. In 132 games, and scoring 17 goals, the striker assisted the club gain promotion and was awarded the Football League Trophy. The year 1997 saw him signed with Brentford for a fee of PS50,000, citing the desire to return into the South of England as the reason to leave Carlisle. Later, he was loaned for Colchester United after scoring just five league goals in 43 games in the Bees. He signed a contract for Colchester in the month of March 1999 and was appointed captain during 1998’s summer. However, he was transferred by Brighton in September of 1999, and the loan was made permanent in the month of November of that year.
In the five years that Aspinall was in Fratton Park Aspinall was a regular in more than 150 games across all competitions, scoring 28 goals. In Wigan, Aspinall began his career as an apprentice aged 13 at his hometown side Wigan Athletic. He signed an official contract at 17. He made his professional debut the month of March, 1985, in an away match in a match against Leyton Orient. He played 33 times in the league and scored 10 goals for Wigan and was transferred to Everton in 1986 for a price of PS150,000. The club immediately loaned him back to Wigan and scored a further 12 goals over 18 games. After Wigan’s season was over, Aspinall returned to Everton in the Premier League, where he played as substitute in place of Gary Lineker in a 3-1 victory.
After only making 10 substitute appearances across all competitions played by the Toffees, Aspinall transferred to Aston Villa for a then club record amount of PS300,000 however, he was unable to prevent the club from being dropped out of in the First Division. Director Billy McNeill, who signed Aspinall was fired and was replaced with Graham Taylor, as Villa was immediately relegated into the First Division, with Aspinall scoring joint top marks. But a poor discipline record led to an ultimatum from Taylor to improve his record or else he’d be sold. An incident at St Mirren in a pre-season game that saw Aspinall striking an opponent’s foot, which led to him being transferred in the direction of Portsmouth for a record-breaking club cost of PS315,000 in August 1988.
