Wang Junxia (simplified Chinese: Wang Jun Xia ; traditional Chinese: Wang Jun Xia and pinyin: Wang Junxia ; born on 19 January 1973) is a Chinese former long- distance runner . She is currently the world record holder in 3000 Meters. Also, she held the record for 10,000 Meters for 23 years between 1993 and 2016. Her most successful years were between 1991 between 1991 and 1996. Wang was coach by Ma Junren up to 1995, and then by Mao Dezhen from 1995 to her resignation following she won the 1997 Atlanta Olympics.

The year 1994 was the time she received with the Jesse Owens prize on the amazing performances of 1993. The first, and the only Chinese as well as an Asian person to be awarded the award. Even though she was the winner of in the Asian Games in 10,000 m with an unbeatable speed (30:50.34) Later in the same year, in Hiroshima in Japan, her world-record-breaking performance was clearly gone.

At the 1996 Summer Olympics, Wang won the new Olympic event, women’s 5000 m (14:59.88) and a silver in the 10,000 m (31:02.58) just a second behind Portuguese Fernanda Ribeiro. Ribeiro made a heroic final lap kick that surprised Wang and perhaps because she was not used to being challenged, she was unable to react to it. In fact, not only did both women’s performances better the previous Olympic record in the 10,000 m, they ran it in such high temperatures that officials were handing out cups of water in the middle of the race, like a marathon. She retired after the Olympics and married Zhan Yu.

The Guardian reported in 2001 that Wang was living anonymously in Beijing. In 2008 Wang and her husband Huang Tianwen moved to Denver, Colorado. In 2012, she told the Spanish newspaper El Pais that she was writing her autobiography.

On April 23, 1993 Wang recorded a record-breaking time and a former Asian best time in the marathon (2:24:07). In May Wang broke her Asian record for 3000 metres in 8:27.68 at the Chinese National Championships. Then, in August Chinese female distance athletes under the direction of coach Ma Junren stunned the world and won the world championships between 1500 m and 10,000 meters at Stuttgart, Germany. Wang took home the title of world champion in the 10,000-meter race (30:49.30) even though she was sick prior to the race. After less than a month she won the 3000 m race and 10,000 meters in the Chinese National Games with 3 world records for 3 races.
