Wakanosato Shinobu (born Shinobu Kogawa, July 10 1976) is a former sumo wrestling champion of Hirosaki, Aomori, Japan. He began his career at the highest division of 1998 and his highest level was sekiwake. The record holder holds the longest consecutive tournaments that were ranked in the junior san’yaku ranks , which includes sekiwake and Komusubi (19 from 2002 to 2005). He took home ten prize money and twice finished second at a tournament. He received two gold stars after defeating yokozuna in a maegashira ranking. He fought in 1691 matches and was ranked sixth in the list of all-time records. In the early days of his high-level career Wakanosato had been regarded as a potential candidate for the Ozeki. From January 2002 through January 2005, he played 19 consecutive tournaments that were ranked either sekiwake or komusubi. an record for all time. But he wasn’t capable of breaking into the “great barrier” (the literal meaning of Ozeki’s literal meaning) and failed to score the required 33 wins in three tournaments. He finished second in the tournament of January 2003 as well as in September 2003. his score of 11-4 was his best chance of making an ozeki. However, he only managed to achieve seven wins in the subsequent tournament. He could not consistently beat the top- ranked wrestlers, failing to beat Takanohana over nine matches and only winning five times in 32 matches in the match against ozeki Chiyotaikai. At first, he had a great head-to head record against Hakuho beating Hakuho the first six times they wrestled. But the final of these wins came in 2005, and then he lost 11 times against Hakuho. He received ten sansho, or other special awards for his good performances at tournaments during his professional career.
In later years on the dohyō he again had injury problems, being forced to withdraw from his final san’yaku-ranked tournament in September 2005 and missing all of the next. He defeated yokozuna Asashōryū on the second day of the 2006 May tournament, his first kinboshi in 45 tournaments (only Kirinji, with 47 tournaments, has had a longer wait between kinboshi) but he could only manage a 6–9 record overall. He was then again forced to sit out all of the September 2006 tournament and fell to the second division once again. However, he made something of a comeback in May 2007, turning in a strong 10–5 record at maegashira 7. He won his 600th career bout in September 2007, and turned in another good performance in May 2008, again finishing on 10–5.
He withdrew from the March 2009 tournament after breaking a metatarsal bone in his right foot during his 11th day bout with Kotoshōgiku. He had surgery on 8 April which put him out of action for at least two months, meaning he had to sit out the following tournament in May. He came back very strongly in July, winning his fourth jūryō championship with a 14–1 record. He reached maegashira 1 in March 2010, his highest rank in over four years. After that he comfortably maintained a position in the mid-to-upper maegashira ranks until he was injured in the November 2011 tournament, resulting in yet another fall to jūryō. However he immediately returned to makuuchi after scoring 11–4 in January 2012.
He was a part of the makuuchi top division for his first attempt in the month of May. He won his first kinboshi, or gold star win over yokozuna Wakanohana during the tournament in November 1998, however, the following day, the ankle was broken in the match against Musoyama and was forced to miss the final day as well as the following days. He was struck by a much worse injury that was more severe in the month of November, breaking his the anterior cruciate ligaments. He missed two consecutive tournaments after surgery and was moved into the division of juryo . He was awarded consecutive juryo championships after his return in July and May of 2000. He was then promoted to makuuchi again in September. He was quickly promoted to the San’yaku ranks and made Komusubi in the month of November 2000, and rebounding from a loss of 2-6 to make it 9-6. This led to his promotion. became a sekiwake the first time in January 2001.

The first time he attempted sumo was the third grade, when it was a contest for fourth graders and above and finished third. In middle school, he was working every day at a dojo in sumo. He was acquainted with Takahanada (later to become the 64th yokozuna Takanohana) as an international tour stopped by Hirozaki City, getting into the fight with the other. He began professional sumo in the month of March 1992 after completing his middle school, despite having accepted admission to Hirosaki Jitsygyo High School. He had been offered more than five different heya after his graduation, however the relatively small and new Naruto stable enticed the young man.
