In isolation, these activities do not necessarily produce a pleasing or complete sound. Subsequent vocalises in Smith’s progression seek to achieve balance between these two forces.

Since the early 19th century, vocal pedagogy has made use of the vocalise as a means to present to the student specific technical challenges with an aim to solving those challenges in order to make a sound of ever increasing quality and consistency.

Smith is appointed on the faculty of the Moores School of Music of the University of Houston in 1990. The year 1991 was when he started instructing the apprentice artists of the Houston Grand Opera Studio. In 1996 He joined on the staff of Aspen Music Festival and School. He was named as a professor at The Juilliard School. He quit The University of Houston but retained his position at Houston Grand Opera which required him to travel regularly to New York and Houston until when he quit Houston Grand Opera in 2003.

William Stephen “Steve” Smith (born on the 18th of December 1950) is an American voice instructor author, baritone and author. He is Professor of Opera and Voice in the Bienen School of Music of Northwestern University, voice faculty for the Ryan Opera Center of Lyric Opera of Chicago and voice faculty emeritus for the Aspen Music Festival and School and the founder/director of the Naked Voice Institute.

After being named valedictorian of Corning High School in 1968, Smith attended Harding University and graduated with the degree of B.A. in music in the year 1972. Smith’s voice instructor during his time at Harding at the time was Erle T. Moore. He continued his studies at The University of Arkansas, studying voice alongside Richard Brothers and graduating with an M.M. in voice in 1975.
