Around the middle of the 1980s, television producers and agents became aware of Walden by his local appearances at Santa Monica. When approached for the next TV show Walden was not sure about the offer but agreed to the deal. “I could see the handwriting on the wall for touring,” the singer would later recall, “and it wasn’t pretty. I was always thinking of Holiday Inn at age 60.” The show on television that he was cast in was thirtysomething. It proved to be a hugely successful television show and drastically altered Walden’s musical career.

William Garrett Walden, known as W. G. Snuffy Walden (born on 13th February 1950) is an American musician and composer of television and film soundtracks. Walden was an Emmy Award winner for his work on the theme music for The West Wing (NBC) and has been nominated to numerous Emmys over the course of his career. He has also been awarded the award of 26 BMI Awards.
In the latter half of the 1960s, Walden dropped out of school and quit his job and decided to play the guitar full-time. He picked up a bassist (Al Roberts) and drummer (Randy Reeder) to form a trio group called Aphrodite. They began touring and ended up in Denver and played local clubs as well as opening for acts such as Buddy Miles. In Denver when Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s manager Neville Chesters, saw them in a bar and suggested they sign an recording contract with the ELP record label Manticore. After 1972, they relocated from the US to England and was reformed conserving Al Roberts and changing the name to Stray Dog. In the UK, they contracted by Manticore in 1972, and Greg Lake produced three songs from their debut album Stray Dog. The group’s new members toured with ELP as their open act but they never did anything to really take off, and then eventually disbanded. After the dissolution of the group, Walden supplanted the ailing Paul Kossoff by providing guitar tracks for Free’s final album Heartbreaker which came out in 1973. (Walden is featured on ‘Common Mortal”, ‘Easy On My Soul’, and Seven Angels’). Also, he played electric guitar on his solo debut album Still, which was written by King Crimson the lyricist Peter Sinfield. In 1975 the band was formed by Eric Burdon Band and performed for one year with them.
In July 2002, Tom Guerra conducted a comprehensive interview of Walden for Vintage Guitar Magazine. In April 2008, Stephen J. Abramson interviewed Walden for a four-hour, multi-part video series for the Television Academy.
