Duthiers is a native of and was raised at home in New York, the son of Haitian immigrants with a little French descent. Duthiers is fluent in French as well as Haitian Creole. He was a student at in the University of Rhode Island, initially as a journalist before focusing on political science. He graduated in 1991 and then began his career in Wall Street in the financial services sector. He was a part of the asset management firm AllianceBernstein in 1993, where he was promoted to the position of Managing Director responsible for business development across Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East, before returning part-time to pursue a degree in broadcast journalism at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
While in Nigeria Duthiers was a reporter on his coverage of the terror activities carried out by Boko Haram which, in addition to kidnapping the Chibok girls, are responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Nigerians since 2009. In this region, Duthiers reported on the ongoing military operations in Mali as well as the terrorist attack, in the In Amenas hostage conflict in Algeria as well as the trial and sentence of Former Liberian warlord Charles Taylor at the ICC in Sierra Leone, the crash of Dana Air Flight 992, and the visit of President Obama to Senegal.
