He was the President pro tempore for the Alabama Senate. She was elected without opposition in both 1998 and 2002.

Figures is the Democratic candidate in the United States Senate seat that was held by Republican Jeff Sessions in the 2008 election. He won in the July 2008 Democratic primary by a majority of 64% votes. Aaron was a campaigner for Figures and held events in a variety of Alabama cities. On November 4 Aaron fell to Sessions with 37 percent of the votes to Sessions’s 63%..

In April 2019, Davis Figures announced that she would run to be the chair of the Alabama Democratic Party. She dropped out of the race in June.

Figures has been elected to Council in 1993. Mobile City Council in 1993. In her role she was known as a fervent community advocate. Early in her council career, she led the opposition to a proposed facility for burning petroleum- contaminated oil near downtown Mobile. As a council member Figures was the first supporter of the idea to name Mobile’s new minor-league baseball park after legendary home run hitter Hank Aaron, a Mobile native.

Following the death of her husband at the age of 96, Figures took on the seat of the Alabama Senate. She received the highest number of votes in the initial round of the primary Democratic Party election with 47 percent but she did not get the majority needed to prevent a runoff election. She was defeated by James Buskey in the runoff and then defeated Republican Gregory Ramos to win the election to the state Senate and was sworn into the office in January of 1997. Within the Alabama Senate, Figures serves as chairwoman for the Education as well as the Mobile County Local Legislation Committees. As a legislator, Figures might be most well recognized as the ardent supporter of a bill to prohibit smoking in indoor public spaces across Alabama. In the general session of 2008 it passed the Senate it believed to have enough support to get through the House as the governor Bob Riley had indicated he was likely to sign the bill. The bill fell because of legislative filibusters that prevented any final approval within the House. Figures also played a role in the passing of economic incentives which helped in the selection of a ThyssenKrupp steel plant close to Mobile.

In November 2012, Alabama Senate Democrats selected Figures to be their floor leader for the next two year term. She became the first woman to lead either the majority or minority party in either house of the Alabama Legislature.
