Grilli was appointed deputy minister of economy and finances in November 2011, and served in this post until 11 July 2012 prior to his appointment as minister. Grilli also worked as an advisor to private companies including Enel and Alitalia. He is a member of the European think tank organization Bruegel and of the Aspen Institute Italia.
Grilli was an assistant professor of economics in the Department of Economics of Yale University between 1986 and 1990. After that, he was appointed to the University of London’s Birkbeck College as the Woolwich Professor of economics of finance from 1990 until 1994. He was director of the economics department as well as privatizations and financial analysis at the ministry of treasuryand finance and budget from 1994 until 2000. Then , he was promoted to the director of management and chief of the Italian investment banking institution Credit Suisse First Boston (CSGN) in London in 2001. He remained in the position until 2002. Then, he was named general accountant of Italian state at the time of 2002. his tenure ran until 2005. He was appointed Director General of the Italian Treasury in 2005 and was in the position until. He was elected vice-president of the Economic and Financial Committee (EFC) within the European Union in March 2009 and, in March 2011, Grilli was appointed chair of the EFC. The term of Grilli lasted until January 2012, when Grilli was replaced by Thomas Wieser in the post.

Vittorio Grilli (born 19 May 1957) is an Italian economist and professor. He was Italy’s economic and finance minister as part of the Monti cabinet from 2012 until 2013.
Grilli was given his Gold Medal of Bocconi University (1981) and the Saint Vincent Prize for Economics (1992) as well as the Tarantelli Prize for the best economic concept (2004) and the 2005 Bocconi Prize as well as the Guido Carli Award for the most innovative financial initiative – the Fund for SMEs (2010). The year 2011, Grilli also given the title of Grand Cross Knight (Cavaliere di Grand Croce).
On 9 September 2012, Grilli announced that Italy’s current financial status did not require to apply for the new euro-zone aid program. In December 2012, he reported that he did not have any plan to work in a government post or a treasury position after the 2013 February general election in Italy. Grilli’s term as economy minister ended in April 2013 and Fabrizio Saccomanni succeeded him in the post.
