In Wimbledon 1978 Ruzici was unable to win a prestigious quarterfinal match against an Australian Evonne Goolagong Cawley , who was injured in her ankle. Goolagong’s injury resulted in her falling off the court as her husband Roger Cawley, came onto the court to help his wife. He technically evicted the Australian from playing. As Goolagong recuperated, Ruzici agreed to continue the match, but she lost 7-5, 6-3, and was recognized for her sporting sagacity. It was reported in the broadcasts that Ruzici’s triumph in the year 1980 at a tennis event at Salt Lake City was watched by Richard Williams who was inspired by her victory and the prize money to help the daughters of his Venus as well as Serena Williams to play tennis.
Ruzici was a part of the top 20 of the world’s elite from 1977 until 1983. She was a regular player as a member of the Romania Fed Cup team throughout her career. She started playing in the team in 1973, a year before becoming a professional.
