Vijay Kumar Chaudhary is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on January 8, 1957 in Dalsinghsarai, Bihar, India. Vijay Kumar Chaudhary (born 8 January 1957) is a prominent Indian politician from India. He is a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly since 1982 and currently serves as the Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly.

As Minister of Water Resources, Chaudhary is credited with the successful completion of Durgawati Reservoir in 2014, the largest irrigation project launched in 1976 that was delayed for 38 years because of the acquisition of land and environmental clearance-related issues. His term (2010-2015) did not experience any major flooding after in 2008’s Bihar flood. Under his guidance his ministry of water resources Water Resources Ministry launched eight river- linking schemes at a cost of 4442 crores.

He retained his Sarairanjan (Vidhan Sabha constituency) in 2015 elections with a margin of 34044 votes. He was elected unopposed to the post of Speaker of Bihar Legislative Assembly on 2 December 2015 after consensus was generated on his name among all political parties of the state, including the Opposition BJP. He also serves as the Chairman of Bihar Foundation, a platform to facilitate interaction between Government of Bihar and the Bihari diaspora.

He was elected as the Leader of JD(U) Legislature Party in the Bihar Legislative Assembly and staked claim to the opposition status. He was subsequently recognized as the Leader of Opposition on 19 February 2015 by then Speaker Uday Narayan Chaudhary. Post victory in the trust vote and Nitish Kumar assuming charge as Chief Minister for the fourth time, he was inducted as the Cabinet Minister for Water Resources with the additional charge of Agriculture, Information & Public Relations and Animal and Fish Resources Departments.

Chaudhary was the General Secretary of the Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee from 2000 to 2005. The Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee was formed by JD(U) in 2005 and unsuccessfully contest the election in October 2005. Choudhary was born in Dalsinghsarai, Samastipur district of Bihar in the Bhumihar Brahman family. His father the late Jagdish Prasad Chaudhary was a freedom-fighter as well as the founder of an Indian National Congress politician and a three-term elected member to the Bihar Legislative Assembly from the Dalsinghsarai constituency. He graduated with a master in Arts in History at Patna University in 1979 and was appointed to the State Bank of India as Probationary Officer at Trivandrum that same year.

After the death of his father, a legislator, at the age of 82, Chaudhary was forced to quit his post and then won the by-election in Dalsinghsarai on an Congress ticket. He was reelected to Dalsinghsarai for two terms in the year 1985 and in 1990. While serving as a legislator, from 1982 to 1995 He was the deputy chairman of Bihar State Industrial Development Corporation (BSIDC) and as the Deputy Chief Whip in the Congress Legislature Party (CLP). He ran for re-election from Dalsinghsarai in 2000 and 1995, but was unsuccessful in the election.

Chaudhary served as the Home Minister-in-charge, putting forth the Government’s stand on home affairs in Bihar Legislative Assembly. He has also held the position of Finance Minister-in-charge and presented Bihar’s Annual Budget for the 2014-15 fiscal. Known for being an efficient administrator and a soft-spoken person with a clean image, he is a close confidante of Nitish Kumar and was speculated to succeed him as Chief Minister of Bihar following the latter’s resignation after the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
