Newton began her career in Fleet Street in 1993 at the Daily Express as a trainee after her graduation from the university, after which she joined the showbiz department for The People. She joined The People in 1998 and was an assistant for Dominic Mohan on The Sun The Sun’s “Bizarre” pages, before becoming the newspaper’s Los Angeles correspondent in 1999. Newton was back in the UK in 2002, to be the showbiz editor of The Daily Mail however she was back at The Sun in 2003 to be the director of “Bizarre” replacing the departing Mohan. Newton said it was the “dream job” in September 2005, but an anonymous critic started the Vickywatch blog that detailed her errors.

Newton’s column was often in contradiction to the column of her News International colleague Rav Singh’s showbiz column that was then published on The News of the World.
