Rask was selected in the second round (42nd overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes. On 29 June 2011, he was selected third overall by the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL in the 2011 CHL Import Draft. While playing in his first year of major junior hockey with the Hitmen, Rask was signed to a three-year entry-level contract with the Carolina Hurricanes on 20 October 2011. Although Team Sweden qualified for the gold medal round, they lost to the United States 3–1.
