The great-great-uncle of De Castellane Boni De Castellane (1867-1932) was a Parisian Dandy with a story of Belle Epoque who married American railroad sheiress Anna Gould. De Castellane was two times elected depute (congressperson) from the Basses-Alpes region in France. De Castellane was brought up by her maternal grandparents and the uncle of her father, Gilles Dufour, one of Karl Lagerfeld’s chief assistants, initially at Fendi and later at Chanel.
In the month of January 1998, Bernard Arnault, chairman and CEO of the world’s most important luxury company LVMH was the first to announce the creation of Christian Dior brand’s inaugural jewelry division, Dior Joaillerie. He also appointed Victoire de Castellane as the Dior Fine Jewelry Designer.
Pieces from Dior Joaillerie’s Belladone Island collection were premiered on January 12, 2007 on the online virtual world Second Life. The entire collection was subsequently presented on February 27 in an exhibition in Monet’s Water Lilies room at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris.
In 2009 de Castellane marked her 10th anniversary at Dior Joaillerie with the Rois et Reines collection. Each of the 20 pieces – 10 kings and 10 queens – featured a three-dimensional skull carved from ornamental and often translucent stones such as chrysolite, chalcedony and jade, then dressed in diamond-encrusted collars and crowns.
De Castellane joined Chanel in 1984, where she began as an assistant to the studio. The creative director Karl Lagerfeld soon asked her to supervise the creation of costumes for jewelry. In the 14 years she worked for Chanel, de Castellane remained an model for Lagerfeld and she brought her style fun to the costume jewelry and layered it with pop-culture and cartoon references.

In the early 1980s Gilles Dufour often took the teenager de Castellane out to famed Parisian nightclubs like Le Palace where she first tried dressing in fun, extravagant and feminine styles, usually wearing Mickey Mouse ears or a devil’s horns-style headband, and wearing Lingerie that was visible in her outer clothes.
She started her career alongside Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel, overseeing the house’s costume jewelry designs for 14 years. Since 1998, she has worked as creative director of Christian Dior’s fine jewelry division. Her personal work has been exhibited in art settings, including a solo show, Fleur d’excès, at Gagosian Gallery in 2011. The second personal exhibition of unique object by Victoire de Castellane called “Animalvegetablemineral” was presented at Gagosian Gallery Davies Street, London & Gagosian Madison Avenue, New York in January and March 2014.
