It was at Florida State University that she was a student with socioologist Leanor Boulin Johnson, who introduced her to the scholarship program within Chicano studies. It was during her time at Florida State University that she was introduced to the Dr. Jean Gould Bryant, who encouraged her to go for graduate school. Ruiz graduated from Florida State in 1977, after which she pursued master’s study in Stanford University where she worked with two professors Albert Camarillo and Estelle Freedman. Camarillo brought Ruiz to research on women’s unions in the cannery in California and to the labor activism of Luisa Moreno. Moreno was a significant role in the life of Ruiz. Ruiz earned her PhD in history at Stanford University in 1982.
