John Mark Eustace (born 3 November 1979) is an English former player and current coach , who is the an assistant coach at Queens Park Rangers. While playing the player played as a central midfielder with Coventry City, Stoke City, Watford and Derby County. He also played on loan with Dundee United, Middlesbrough and Hereford United.
On the 31st of January, 2008, Eustace was signed by Watford after a move to Stoke City for a fee of PS250,000. On the 20th of September, Eustace “scored” a bizarre own goal at the opening of the match of Watford and Reading in which an attempt to score from the goalmouth caused the ball to go nowhere close to the goal line despite the linesman indicating an own goal, much to the delight of the entire ground. A corner by Stephen Hunt bounced off of Eustace and was then re-knuckled to Noel Hunt. The controversial corner for Reading originally conceived of as an attempt to score and later given as an goal. The game finished Watford with a score of 2-2 Reading.
On 9 March 2009 he joined Championship rivals Derby County on loan until the end of the 2008/09 season, in order to help solve the Rams’ midfield injury crisis. He made his Derby debut in the 1–1 draw away to Southampton, and scored against his parent club on the final day of the season. However, Eustace failed to secure a permanent move to Derby at the end of his loan spell with the club and returned to Watford at the beginning of May. However, Derby manager Nigel Clough said “He’s got a year left at Watford. If he’s still in the same situation at the start of next season, needing a loan, then we might look at that.”
Ahead of the season, Watford boss Malky Mackay handed Eustace the captaincy, after USA international DeMerit was released on a bosman transfer. He started the season in good form, scoring Watford’s first goal of the season in a 3–2 win at Norwich City, followed a week later with an over-head finish in a 2–2 draw against former club Coventry which turned out to be 2010/11 goal of the season. Eustace kept the captain’s armband following the managerial appointment of Sean Dyche in June 2011 and signed a new two-year contract until 2013 at the end of July despite interest from Derby County. In June 2013, Eustace was offered a new contract with a player/coach role, which Eustace declined, stating that he was not ready to turn away from playing just yet, therefore leaving the club as a free agent.
Eustace made his return to Stoke squad for the 3rd round of the FA Cup match against Millwall. On the 11th of February, 2007, he began his first league game of the season, in Stoke’s loss 1-0 at Birmingham City. In all, Eustace had 23 league games throughout this season with Stoke as well as Hereford. Eustace was later granted an extension of one year with the club that will run until the end of summer 2008. He was a regular at Stoke in the early part of the 2007-08 season . He was captain of the team until the time he moved from Watford on the final date of the deadline for transfer.
