Vernon Turner (born January 6 1967) is an American professional and college football player who played player at the running back position, as well as a wide receiver, and specialization in return for both the National Football League (NFL) and the NFL Europe League (NFLE) over eight consecutive seasons throughout the 1990s. Turner played for the college team of Carson- Newman College, and then professionally with the Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Rams, Detroit Lions and Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the NFL. He ended his career with Frankfurt Galaxy and Scottish Claymores in the NFLE.
After finishing high school, Turner was accepted into Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee, where he was approached by Head coach Ken Sparks to play running back. At that time, the school was still a part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) which won five Division I national championships during the 1980s. Turner was a participant in 3 of these championships, when the Eagles took home the trophy in 1988, 1986, and 1989. In 1988, as a junior Turner was the top player in rushing, gaining 1,257 yards and 232 carries, as well as the scoring department with 96 scores. In the championship game played in December 1988 the running back was able in leading Carson-Newman to an impressive 56-17 win against Adams State University of Colorado with a 189-yard rush and scoring three touchdowns. He scored the first six points with an 80-yard run during the first game’s play from the scrimmage. His play was recognized as offensive player of the match distinction. Despite finishing his senior year with only a second place in rushing yards behind his teammate Robert Thomas, he was chosen to be on the first team of the all-South Atlantic Conference team in the year 1989. In 1989, Turner ran for 869 yards and scored 12 touchdowns in addition to retrieving 10 kickoffs that accounted for 263 yards, with one that was 75 yards. Turner played his final game at the championship match of national champions on the 16th, when the team defeated Emporia State University of the Kansas 34-20. It was the Eagles winning their third championship in the span of four years. He was a New York native finished his academic career as the second-highest ranked player in the school’s history with 569 attempts to rumble, third with the most with 2,851 yards of rushing and 28 scoring touchdowns on the rushing route.

In the 90 NFL Draft, Turner signed as a free-agent with the Denver Broncos. Turner was released at the Broncos final cut. Turner was a student at Curtis High School on Staten Island where he was a quarterback in football and also competed in the track and field. He was awarded all-state and all-city awards and left the school with more than 4000 yards of passing. In November of 2011, Curtis High School inducted him into its Hall of Fame.
Born in Bedford–Stuyvesant, a neighborhood in the central portion of the New York City borough of Brooklyn, Turner is the oldest of five children, with two brothers and two sisters. Growing up in difficult circumstances, he moved from the slum area in Brooklyn to the quiet neighborhood of Sunnyside on Staten Island while a young child. His mother died when he was a freshman in high school and his stepfather while he was in college.
