Vernon Charles Gibson CB FRS (born 15 November 1958) is a British scientist who was the Chief Scientific Advisor at the Ministry of Defence between 2012 between 2012 and 2016. He is Visiting Professor at Imperial College London and the University of Oxford, Honorary Professor at the University of Manchester and Executive Director of the BP International Centre for Advanced Materials.
In the year 2017, Gibson was appointed Executive Director of the BP International Centre for Advanced Materials. Gibson was the Chief Scientist Advisor for the Ministry of Defence from 2012 to 2016 and Chief Chemistry for BP plc from 2008 to 2012. Prior to that, his position was as the Sir Edward Frankland Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at Imperial College London where, upon the establishment of the Chemistry Department at the University of Durham He earned an international name for his fundamental research of metal complexes and the development of catalyst systems that are new to the production of market-relevant polymers.
He was conferred an honourary Doctor of Science degree by the University of Sheffield in 2010 and was appointed Companion of the Order of the Bath in the 2017 New Year Honours, for contributions to Defence.

Gibson was born in Grantham, Lincolnshire and educated at The King’s School, Grantham and then Grantham High School, followed by the University of Sheffield where he was a student of Chemistry and earned First Class Special Honors degree in the year 1980. He was granted an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Oxford in 1983 as a result of research conducted under the supervision of Malcolm L.H. Green.
Gibson has been the recipient of many international and national distinctions such as those from the Royal Society of Chemistry Corday-Morgan and Tilden Prizes as well as The Royal Society of Chemistry award for Organometallic Chemistry and the Joseph Chatt lectureship. The Society elected him to its Royal Society in 2004 for his pioneering research in the areas of structural, synthetic and bonding research on metal complexes as well as his creation of new catalysts and initiators for controlled polymer synthetics.
