She attended the Carl-Strehl Schule, a special school for those who are blind or partially sighted , in Marburg, Germany. She was awarded her very first Paralympic medals (one gold three silver and one bronze) in 1998’s Winter Paralympics, followed by four gold medals at the 2002 Winter Paralympics, as in addition to two gold and one bronze medals during the 2006 Winter Paralympics She was also the winner from the Combined World Cup in Biathlon and Cross-Country in the year 2006.
Bentele was awarded her the “Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability” award for 2011. In the fall of 2011 the athlete announced retirement 29. In 2014, Bentele was inducted into the Paralympic Hall of Fame.
Even so, just one year later, she was able to achieve her greatest Olympic results, taking home 5 Gold Medals in the 2010 Winter Paralympics in the 2010 Vancouver Paralympics. Due to her performance in the Games Bentele was awarded the title of the best Female in the Paralympic Sport Awards.

At the 2009 German blind cross-country championship, Bentele suffered an accident that was serious. The blind guide’s vision was not sufficient to follow the proper direction which led to her falling down a slope that was an uninhabitable river bed. She injured the cruciate ligament on her knee. She suffered liver and finger injuries and also injured one kidney to the extent that it needed been removed.
Bentele was selected by the Social Democratic Party to be a delegate at the Federal Convention for the purpose to electing the President of Germany in the years 2010 and 2017. Bentele became a part of the social democratic party in the year 2012.
In January 2014, Bentele was appointed Federal Government Commissioner for Matters relating to Disabled Persons in the government of Chancellor Angela Merkel. In this capacity, she was part of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs under the leadership of minister Andrea Nahles and heads the government’s focal point in charge of monitoring the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. She served in that position until 2018.
