Stephen Magnusson is one of the most popular and richest Australian guitarist who was born on February 13, 1969 in Australia. Stephen John Magnusson (born 13 February 1969) is an Australian guitarist from Australia. He is well-known for his performance as an improviser. He has played in his band the Australian Art Orchestra. and Elixir featuring Katie Noonan. Magnusson was given an award called the Melbourne Prize for Music Outstanding Musician Award in 2013.
Magnusson has returned to Europe performing across Germany in 2001 and Switzerland during 2001. He also took SNAG to Australia to perform the East Coast tour and again was a guest in the Wangarratta Jazz Festival.
Since 2003, Magnusson has continued to compose, perform and improvise with a wide range of ensembles across Australia and overseas, releasing over fifteen recordings of his own, and has collaborated on many more, including: the Australian Art Orchestra; Elixir, featuring Katie Noonan; and the Julien Wilson Trio. As a member of the Katie Noonan trio Elixir, the ensemble won the ARIA for Best Jazz Album in 2011. In addition he has worked with: Charlie Haden, Meshell Ndegeocello, Ricki Lee Jones, Sinead O’Connor, John Cale, Gurrumul Yunupingu, Paul Grabowsky, Vince Jones, Katie Noonan, Lisa Young, Christine Sullivan, Michelle Nicole, Martin Breeze, The Assumptions Trio, Megan Washington, Paul Kelly, Jim Black, Mike Nock, Barney McAll, Enrico Rava, and Arthur Blythe among others.
Magnusson has had three compositions added to The Australian Jazz Real Book In 2013 the Melbourne Prize Trust awarded Stephen the highly regarded Outstanding Musician Award to develop his MAGNET project.
After three years of living at Zurich, Magnusson returned to Melbourne in the year 2000. He was a participant in into the National Jazz Awards at the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz with his group, The Stephen Magnusson Trio which included Argentinean drummer Sergio Beresovsky and trumpeter Eugene Ball. They were tied for first place. The trio then released their debut album Healing Songs. in 2001.

Magnusson started playing musical instruments when he was three years old when he received an Ukulele. He was just six when he acquired his first guitar, and began to perform when he was 10 on an electric guitar which was borrowed from the school teacher. He began to study formal the art of improvisation with Gordon Pendelton at Box Hill TAFE in 1985. The year 1986 was when Magnusson was enrolled in formal instruction at the highly regarded Victorian College of the Arts. There, he studied under the guidance by some of Australia’s top performers, Tony Gould, Bob Sedergreen and Paul Grabowsky. He played improvised music and composition as well as joining bands and exploring various styles, while gaining an understanding of the workings of his instrument as well as the art of the art of improvisation.
Magnusson traveled to Europe in the late 1990s performing and working with musicians from Switzerland, Germany, Bulgaria and the Netherlands. In 1997, he was appointed as a member of the faculty at The Academy of Contemporary Music in Zurich and also met his long-time colleague Sergio Beresovsky. They regularly performed together with Bjorn Meyer, a Swedish bassist, and shortly after, they were joined by Australian saxophonist Julien Wilson. They created their group SNAG and released a self-titled album that is released in Australia under the title Hey Guess What. Magnusson also taught and played throughout Europe and regularly performed in SNAG as well as other ensembles. He was awarded two grants by the Swiss Arts Council POP KREDIT and was also nominated in 1999 to receive an award called the Swiss Fellowship award.
Magnusson arrived back in Australia in 2002, where he spent time in the Northern Territory playing music in Aboriginal communities with old friend and collaborator Stephen Teakle. This had a significant impact on both his life and his music. Back in Melbourne, he embarked on a recording that would incorporate these influences compositionally and sonically. It is at this point when his distinctive and unique sound began to emerge. Boundaries was released that year with Bassist Frank Di Sario. These two events were pivotal in the next chapter of Magnusson’s career.
