Vedran Runje is one of the most popular and richest Association Football Player who was born on February 10, 1976 in Sinj, Croatia. Vedran Runje (Croatian pronunciation: [vedran runeBorn the 10th of February in 1976) is a former Croatian footballer who was goalkeeper. Born at the Hajduk Split academy, Runje was a major part of his time in Europe with Standard Liege in Belgium, Marseille and Lens in France as well as Besiktas within Turkey. While at Standard the team, he was awarded three Belgian League Goalkeeper of the Award of the Year. Runje was also selected 22 times by the Croatia national team, and was part of the team during the UEFA Euro 2008.
Runje was back at Standard Liege in the summer of 2004 and signed a three-year contract. In his second stint with Standard the club, he also won a Belgian Goalkeeper of the Year award in 2006. In the summer of the following year, he was transferred to Turkish club Besiktas. He was the goalie of choice at Besiktas in the 2006-07 season and made 32 Super Lig appearances and also playing in all the club’s six UEFA Cup matches during the season.
In the summer of 2007, Runje left Beşiktaş and returned to the French Ligue 1 after being signed by RC Lens. He appeared in all of the club’s 38 matches in the Ligue 1 during the 2007–08 season, but was unable to prevent them from being relegated to the Ligue 2 after finishing 18th in the top flight. He also appeared in all of the club’s 6 European matches during the season.
Runje was also a member of the Croatian 23-man squad at the UEFA Euro 2008 finals in Austria and Switzerland, making his only appearance in Croatia’s final group game against Poland in Klagenfurt. He kept a clean sheet in a 1–0 victory for Croatia, who played the game with a second string of players, having already secured a place in the quarter-finals after beating Austria and Germany in their previous two matches at the tournament. His only other international appearance during the year 2008 came in a friendly match at Slovenia in August, where he replaced Pletikosa at half-time.
Runje was a part of Standard Liege until 2001, receiving the honour of Belgian Goalkeeper of Year in both 1999 and 2001. Then he joined French Olympique Marseille who was his first choice goalkeeper for the next two and a half years. He played a role in helping Marseille to qualify for in the UEFA Champions League in 2003 and was a part of 5 of the team’s six games during the group stage of the tournament in 2003-2004. The team’s primary goalkeeper from December 2003 until being sacked after his replacement by Fabien Barthez on January of 2004 and he did not make any performances in Ligue 1 and European competition until the close of the season.

Between 1993 between 1993 and 1996, Runje earned a total 8 caps in international competition for Croatian team’s under-19 as well as under-21 national teams. Runje also played in a match for Croatia B during a friendly game against Romania in January 2001.
Runje started his career with Hajduk Split in 1996, but he wasn’t able to become an established player in the first team due to the first Tonci Gabric, who was the Croatian national team’s goalkeeper backup during that time period, but later the young player Stipe Pletikosa being picked over him. The club eventually disbanded him in 1998 to join Belgian club Standard Liege.
When Slaven Bilić was appointed Croatia’s head coach in the summer of 2006, Runje started to play understudy to Stipe Pletikosa in the national team. He made his full international debut on 15 November 2006 in Croatia’s UEFA Euro 2008 qualifier at Israel, which they won 4–3. His second appearance in the UEFA Euro 2008 qualifiers came in Croatia’s 6–0 win at Andorra in September 2007, and he also made further two international appearances in Croatia’s friendly matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovakia during the same year.
