He is among the most well-known and well-read, modern Ukrainian writers. Some have even dubbed his work as the “Father of the Ukrainian Bestseller”. In 2011, the Committee of the Shevchenko National Prize has declared him as a Shevchenko Prize Laureate in 2011.
“Chornyi Voron” by Shkliar “Chornyi Voron” (about Vasyl Chuchupak and his Kholodny Republic) resonated powerfully in the present Ukrainian society. The book was released in the latter half in 2009, by “Yaroslavskyi val” company (Kyiv) and, practically concurrently by the firm “Klub simeynoho dozvillya” (Kharkiv) under the title (“Zalyshenets”). The interest in the book was amplified by the publishing an extract. In July of 2011, an audio edition of “Zalyshenets” was published by Mystetska Ahentsiya “Nash Format”. The narration was provided by Petro Boyko, a well-known Ukrainian radio journalist, priest and activist for culture. The novel retells some of the most thrilling and at the same time, heavily censored, pages in Ukrainian historical record, the fight for independence by insurgents armed against the occupying armies during the 1920s. There were a number of reviews that appeared after the publication of the novel and a speech on the book was given on the stage of Ukraine’s Parliament by famous novelist also Ukrainian Parliamentarian Volodymyr Yovorivskyi. The novel is translated in English from the Russian language by Steve Komarnyckyj as well as Susie Speight of Kalyna Language Press and released under the name “Raven” by Aventura ebooks.
He was a journalist until 1986 before launching his writing career as a writer of fiction. He’s written and published more than 10 books which include novellas “Tin Sovy” and “Nostalhia” (Nostalgia) as well as novels and short stories, including “Snih” and “Zhyvytsya”.

His birthplace was in Hanzhalivka, Lysianka Raion, Cherkasy Oblast, where he began his schooling. After that, the family relocated into the city of Zvenyhorodka and there Shkliar finished his tenth year of education by receiving the silver medal (1968) He then joined an philology department at the Faculty of Philology at Kyiv University. The university was about to expel him due to the fact that during a labor semester at a farm that was a collective, Shkliar discovered a grenade in potatoes. The novel was completed in 1998, after the author’s recovery and began work on the story in the hospital. It was published several times by the Ukrainian government Ukraine (by 2009, it had been published 12 occasions) as well as internationally (it was transliterated into Swedish, Russian and Armenian. Between the years 200 and 2004, his position was Chief Editor of “Dnipro” publishing He is proficient in Armenian and can translate from Armenian and modern Greek in Ukrainian. The translation he made from “Taras Bulba” by Nikolai Gogol that was which was based on the original edition published in 1835, triggered an uncharacteristic response by his home country’s Russian Embassy. Shkliar’s use of Gogol’s initial text meant modifications made by Gogol which transformed the book from one that was pro Ukrainian to one that was a Tsarist text because of a combination of Russian criticism as well as financial incentive, was left out. In the end, however, the Russian ambassador to Ukraine, Viktor Chernomyrdin, was later criticized Shkliar for the work. Chornyi Voron” (Committee of the National Ukrainian Taras Shevchenko Premier National Premier awarded Shkliar the laureateship in the middle of February 2011.On the 4 March 2011 Shkliar wrote to the President of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych in which he requested the President to “take account in your order regarding the award of the Shevchenko Laureateship of my request for my award to be deferred until such time as the Ukrainophobe Dmytro Tabachnyk is no longer in power.” In the presidential decree published shortly thereafter, No. 275/2011 of 4 March 2011″Regarding the adjudication of the National Ukrainian Taras Shevchenko Premier” no reference is made to Vasyl Shkliar. The subsequent fate of the award is as yet unknown. On 17 April 2011 in Kholodnyi Yar Vasyl Shkliar was awarded the first ever People’s Shevchenko Prize. The ceremony was held at the memorial on the site of the last battle fought by Otaman Vasyl Chuchupaka.
