Varuzhan Akobian (Armenian: Varowzhan Hakobyan , born on 19 November 1983, in Yerevan, Soviet Union) is an Armenian-born American Chess Grandmaster. Originating from Armenia and now lives at St. Louis. He was a member of the bronze medal- winning U.S. team in the 2006 and 2008 Chess Olympiads.
In May of 2014, while competing in the U.S. Chess Championship in Saint Louis Akobian was tied for first place alongside Gata Kamosky along with Aleksandr Lenderman, going to an all-star playoff between three players to determine who would become champion. In the Armageddon Game he defeated Lenderman and then went on to play his Rapid Match against Kamsky, which resulted in 1,5 points for Kamsky to 0,5 for Akobian which awarded Kamsky the title and giving Akobian the runner-up at this year’s U.S. Chess Championship.
In 2007 Akobian was included on the MTV’s True Life documentary series, in an episode called “I’m a Genius”.

Akobian An Armenian American, became an International Master at age 16. At the age of 16, he relocated into his home in the United States and one week after his 20th birthday, in November 2003, he earned the title Grandmaster.
He was the winner of his place in the World Open tournament in Philadelphia in three separate times. He was a joint first-place winner in 2002, and then won the title outright in 2004 as well as 2007. In 2006, he was tied for first place in the San Marino tournament with a performance score of 2796. In 2007, he was tied for 1st-8th along with Hikaru Nagamura, Alexander Shabalov, Darmen Sadvakasov, Zviad Izoria, Victor Mikhalevski, Magesh Chandran Panchanathan and Justin Sarkar in the Miami Open and was a close second during the American Continental Championship in Cali, Colombia. He was then qualified for his participation in the Chess World Cup 2007, which he lost in the opening round. He also played at the Chess World Cup 2009 and was eliminated by Ruslan Ponomariov during the second round.
As of May 2014, he was the fifth highest rated player in the US, with a FIDE rating of 2643.
