Nunes has also had success in longer distance races. In 2001, he was the winner of the 246-kilometer (153 miles) Spartathlon in Greece in an average in 23 hours, 17 mins and 5 secs. The course record is held by him for 135 miles (217 kilometers) Badwater Ultramarathon. In 2007, he was the first runner who completed this race under 24 hours. He set the course record at 22,51 mins and 28 seconds. In the course, temperatures were as high as 114 degrees (46 degree Celsius).

Nunes first achieved success in the 100-kilometer (62 miles) distance race. He won his first world title in the year 1991. He also won the first place at the U.S.A. National 100 Kilometer Championship, finishing ahead of his first American. In 1995, Nunes established the world record by running the time of 6 hours 19 minutes, and nine seconds at Winschoten, Netherlands. The record was not broken until 1998.
Nunes also coaches runners, who participate in ultramarathons and marathons. In 1998, Nunes inspired his maid, Sirlene Pinho, to start running competitively. She later won an Olympic bronze medal in the marathon race at 2007’s Pan American Games.
In October 2010 Nunes attempted to break the world record for a 24-hour treadmill race. Although he won the race by running 215.60 kilometres (133.97 mi), he was unable to break the world record of 257.8 kilometres (160.2 mi).
