He is currently involved with political economy at universities near Madrid.

Salov earned his International Master title in 1984 and also the Grandmaster designation in 1986. Salov had been his World Under-17 champion in the year 1980 and also the European Junior Champion in 1983-84. He was a joint first- place finisher alongside Alexander Beliavsky in the 1987 USSR Championship, but he lost the tiebreaker with Beliavsky (+0-2=2). In the 1988 USSR Championship he finished tied third Artur Yusupov, who was in the middle of Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov.
