In the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Nebraska, the qualifying event to be part of the U.S. Olympic team, McGill placed second in the 100-meter butterfly race with the time in 51.32 seconds, which is just a fraction ahead of Michael Phelps and just ahead of Ryan Lochte. In the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, McGill placed sixth in the 100-meter butterfly and won an Olympic gold medal for swimming in the preliminaries of the winning U.S. team in the 4×100-meter relay.
In the 2011, World Aquatics Championships in Shanghai, China, McGill won bronze for the 100-meter butterfly event, coming in just behind Michael Phelps and Konrad Czerniak. In the final day of contest, McGill won a gold medal in the 4×100-meter Medley relay for his efforts during the heats.

McGill was a student at Champaign Central High School in Champaign, Illinois. McGill was a student at Auburn University, and competed for the Auburn Tigers swimming and diving team under the direction of head coach Brett Hawke from 2007 to 2010. In the four years of swimming at the college level and diving, he took home NCAA champions for the freestyle event of 400 meters as well as the 4×100-yard medley relay and also an SEC title in the freestyle event of 800 yards.
In the 2009 U.S. Nationals and World Championship Trials, McGill placed second behind Michael Phelps in the 100-meter butterfly race with a time 51.06 which earned him a place to participate in the 2010 World Aquatics Championships in Rome.
