Tuineau Alipate (/t u:’n A U, ae L I ” p a: I born August 21 1967) is a former linebacker in the gridiron who was a member of the National Football League (NFL) as well as the Canadian Football League (CFL). After his college football career in the state of Washington State University, Alipate was a player for his team the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL from 1989 until 1992. The year 1989 was the time he was a part of the Roughriders team which took home the 1977 Grey Cup. After being removed from his former team, the Roughriders, Alipate tried out for several NFL teams, and was offered an opportunity to be on the practice squad with the New York Jets. Alipate went on to play with both the Jets as well as the Minnesota Vikings from 1994 to 1996, with a focus as a special team player. He also played a brief period playing for his team the Green Bay Packers in 1995.
Alipate was a regular participant for both the Los Angeles Raiders and the New York Jets in 1993 However, he did not join the rosters for both teams. in 1994 Alipate appeared to be among Jets the final cut list prior to the beginning in the season however, he was given an opportunity to join the team’s practice team. The Jets often changed Alipate back and forth between the practice squad as well as their active squad throughout the course of the season. On November 14th, Alipate returned a fumbled punt during 17-10 defeat against the Green Bay Packers. Alipate also caused a fumble during a game on November 27 in the game against The Miami Dolphins. The Jets’ quarterback completed his season with eight games with the Jets. When he was active, Alipate was used mostly as a special team player. Alipate was signed as a member of his Green Bay Packers’ practice team in January of 1995. He signed a new contract as a player with the Packers on February 21 but was released on June 12, 1995.
In July 1995 in July 1995, the Minnesota Vikings acquired Alipate for use on special teams. In the course of the year, Alipate was also used as a back-up for several positions, including linebacker at middle and the strongside. He was a part of all 16 games of the regular season during the season, however, his participation was restricted for special-teams. Alipate was dropped from the Vikings following his training session in the year 1996 to make way for of the draft’s first-round pick Duane Clemons. Alipate played as a player for the Vikings in 1998, but was not signed by the team.

Alipate was hired to his team the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1989 but released before the start in the season. However, he returned to the team in 17 games during the regular season during the season. Alipate had a lot of success despite a number of injuries to linebackers, and finished his season being one of just two linebackers of the Roughriders who escaped injuries in the year 1989. In the week 17 victory in the clash with Calgary Stampeders, Alipate blocked an extra-team punt and snatched up Tom Porras to be named the CFL’s Defensive player of the Week. Alipate recorded 31 tackles and three fumble recovery during his first season, and received the Roughriders choice for the rookie of the Award of the Year. Alipate picked up a fumble during the West Division Final, setting the stage for a touchdown. The Roughriders went on the upset the championship-favorite Edmonton Eskimos 32-21 to become division champions. The Roughriders took home their 77th Grey Cup 43-40 against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The year was 1990. Alipate was a part of all the 18 games of the regular season in the Roughriders and recorded 35 tackles.
The Tiger-Cats were traded to Alipate in the month of May, 1991 as part of an agreement to send Tom Worman, the quarterback, to Saskatchewan. Because of the CFL’s import-to-importer ratio, Alipate was held out of games at the beginning in the regular season. He was drafted in place of Pete Giftopoulos in early September however, he was later injured and put as a reserve. Alipate finished his season by registering 25 tackles and three sacks and a fumble recovery over the course of seven games. He was part of the Saskatchewan Roughriders signed Alipate for training camp in 1992 but he was cut before the beginning of the regular season.
Alipate was born in Tonga and moved to the San Francisco Bay area when he was eight years old. He did not play football until he attended James Logan High School in Union City, California. He was inducted into the James Logan High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010. He played college football with the Washington State Cougars. In his senior year, he missed all but two games due to a broken thumb. Alipate returned in time for the Aloha Bowl against the Houston Cougars, where he forced a fumble on Houston’s final possession to preserve a 24–22 win.
