Yonchev is a native of Vratsa. A child of the local Club Botev Vratsa, he spent two seasons with the club’s first team, before joining CSKA Sofia in 1975. He played in 234 games at the club’s A Group and scored 54 goals.
Yonchev was a crucial player in the CSKA team that made it to the 1980-81 European Cup quarterfinals and 1981-82 European Cup semifinals. On the 17th of September, 1981, Yonchev scored a goal in the 1-0 victory at home of his team against the holders Nottingham Forest; he also played in the second leg which ended in a 1-0 victory at the City Ground. The second time around, Yonchev had a three-goal hat trick in a 4-0 win at home against Szombierki Bytom. On March 4, 1981, he scored the sole goal in a 5-1 loss to Liverpool at Anfield in their quarter-final’s first leg match.
