Calhoun was born in McMinnville, Oregon in 1966 but his family relocated from McMinnville, Oregon to Roseburg, Oregon when Calhoun was only 3 years old. Calhoun was a student at Roseburg High School, where he played football with long-time Roseburg head coach Thurman Bell. Alongside Bell, Calhoun also counts Dayton High coach Dewey Sullivan–a Calhoun close friend of the family–as an influential figure in his early years.
The year 1995 saw him transferred from Ohio University. Ohio University where he served as the quarterbacks’ coach for two seasons. He was appointed the offensive coordinator at the end of 1997. In his first year at Ohio his team, the offense achieved significant success, especially during a match with Eastern Michigan, in which the team tallied 612 yards, the second highest ever recorded by the school. They also won victory over Maryland in 1997. This was the first Ohio victory over schools that was part of the ACC. In the next period, Ohio fell three points short of beating Kansas State. In Calhoun’s final season in Ohio at the time of 2000, Ohio’s team’s offense recorded a school record 418.1 yards per match. They also the team rushed for a school record 3,553 yards. The Bobcats finished their season by beating two bowl teams: Minnesota as well as Marshall.
Calhoun began his NFL career with the Denver Broncos as a defensive assistant in 2003, and later moved to offense and special teams. When Broncos offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak was hired as the Texans’ head coach, Kubiak brought Calhoun along and made Calhoun his offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Calhoun finished out the 2006 season with the Texans before taking over at Air Force.
Calhoun was hired on December 22, 2006 to be the head football coach for Air Force, replacing DeBerry who retired after 23 years as the Falcons’ head coach. In his first season as head coach of the Falcons, he took the team to a 9–3 record, and a spot in the Armed Forces Bowl against Cal. On December 4, 2007, Calhoun was named Mountain West Coach of the Year for 2007.
After having graduated of the United States Air Force Academy in 1989, Calhoun served on the Air Force coaching staff under Fisher DeBerry as a graduate assistant throughout those seasons of 1989-1990. Following the completion of his military obligation Calhoun continued to be the Falcons recruit coordinator and an offensive coordinator for juniors during the 1993-94 seasons.
