Carl “Trooper” Taylor (born 20 February 1970) is a American soccer coach for the college team who is a coach at Duke University. Taylor was previously as an assistant coach for Auburn University from January 2009 until December 2012, when Taylor was the an assistant coach and the wide receivers’ coach for the former Head Coach Gene Chizik. Before joining Auburn, Taylor served as the offensive coordinator for Oklahoma State. Taylor has been coaching for more than 10 years coaching wide receivers, with a focus on the Southeastern and Big 12 conferences.

Taylor has been a position coach to a variety of famous players throughout his career. At Tulane where he was a coach, he guided four wideouts to the NFL as well as Roydell Williams from the Washington Redskins. He also coached the country’s most prolific trio of receivers during 2001, which included Adrian Burnette, Kerwin Cook along with Terrell Harris. The trio teamed up to be the top ranked player in the nation with 2,384 receiving yards from the ground with 185 catch.

He has experience coaching in 9 bowl games including the 1994 Alamo Bowl, 2002 Hawaii Bowl, 2005 Cotton Bowl Classic, 2007 Outback Bowl, 2008 Outback Bowl, 2008 Holiday Bowl, 2010 Outback Bowl, the 2011 BCS National Championship Game, and the 2011 Chick-fil-A Bowl.

In 2008, Taylor coached Oklahoma State’s All-American receiver Dez Bryant into the 3rd leading receiver in the nation with catches totaling nearly 114 yards per game. Bryant was part of a potent Cowboys attack that ended ranked as the nation’s 6th leading offense.

Taylor was a defensive back for the Baylor Bears from 1988-91 and completed his playing time as the school’s leading player in kickoff return and return yards. After helping to lead the Bears to win the 1991 Copper Bowl and completing his master’s degree, Taylor joined the coaching staff at his old school as an assistant to the graduate program for two years prior to being appointed wide receivers coordinator in the spring of 1994. After being the coach of at the defensive position for two years Taylor was back to coach receivers prior to departing Baylor to assume the role of as a coach for the running backs of New Mexico.

During his time in Knoxville, he coached NFL backs Cedric Houston and Gerald Riggs Jr., who became Tennessee’s only pair of 1,000-yard rushers in the same season in 2004. He also coached future NFL wide receiver Robert Meachem to All-America honors in 2006. Meachem was part of a trio of Vols receivers including Jayson Swain and Bret Smith that caught a combined 159 receptions for 2,439 yards and 22 touchdowns. With all three players gone in 2007, Taylor mentored the new pass-catching trio of Lucas Taylor, Austin Rogers and Josh Briscoe to a combined 175 catches for 2,130 yards and 14 touchdowns.
