Early Life

Travis Shane Taylor was born on July 24, 1968, in Decatur, Alabama. He is the son of Charles Taylor, who worked as a machinist for Wyle Laboratories, a subcontractor for NASA during the 1960s. His fascination with science and engineering began at a young age, taking apart household electronics and reading science fiction. While still in high school, Taylor built a radio telescope with the assistance of his neighbor and won the state science fair. This achievement opened doors for him, with the Army offering him a job and scholarship.

Education

Taylor’s academic pursuits began with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Auburn University in 1991. He continued his studies at the University of Alabama, Huntsville where he earned a Masters in Physics in 1994, a PhD in Optical Science and Engineering in 1999, and a Masters in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in 2001. Taylor further broadened his education by completing a Masters in Astronomy in 2004 at the University of Western Sydney and a second PhD from the University of Alabama, Huntsville in Aerospace Engineering in 2012.

While in high school, Taylors’ family moved to Somerville, near Huntsville, next door to an Army scientist. At 17 years old, with the help of his neighbor, he built a radio telescope that won the state science fair and placed sixth in the nation. This led the Army to offer Taylor a job working at Redstone Arsenal on direct energy weapons systems directly out of high school as well as a scholarship. Taylor is a black belt martial artist, a private pilot, a scuba diver, races mountain bikes, competed in triathlons, and has been the lead singer and rhythm guitarist of several hard rock bands.
