In 2011 Hoshino received his first Kenzaburo Oe Prize for his novel Ore Ore (2010), which examines the meaning for identity within the modern age. The title is derived in reference to the first person Japanese word ore (An ‘I’ or’me’) . In the beginning of the novel, the protagonist engages in a type of fraud that is known in Japan as an ore-ore scam (An An Zha Qi “me-me scam”) that involves him contacts an elderly person, pretending to be a family member, and attempts to convince the person who is on the other side of the to transfer money. In the novel, the protagonist discovers that he is unknowingly entangled in the world by the identity of the one they have taken for granted, and as someone else takes on his identity. This triggers a chain reaction of identity theft that extends to the edge of society and creates an increasingly eerie and perilous world where nobody is the person they appear to be. The novel is translated into ME from Charles De Wolf for Akashic Books.
