Tommy Thigpen (born March 17 1971) is a American NCAA football coach as well as former athlete. Tommy is the defensive coordinator and linebackers ‘ coach at University of North Carolina, which he took on in January of this year. In the past, he served for fourteen years working in the role of an assistant coach within the college ranks, including an experience with Auburn University where he was part of the 2010 National Championship team. Thigpen was an offensive linebacker at the University of North Carolina and afterward was drafted by New York Giants of the National Football League (NFL). He also was a player in the Barcelona Dragons of the World League of American Football (WLAF).

When Meyer moved to Utah at the end of 2003 Thigpen got the job of Ron Turner as the cornerbacks coach at the University of Illinois. He stayed on the team for the next year as the linebackers’ coach for the Fighting Illini and was one of two assistant coaches who were able to keep their jobs after Turner was dismissed. Even though the new director Ron Zook asked him to stay on the team, Thigpen decided to take the same role at his old school, North Carolina, for the 2005 season. In his four years as a student at Chapel Hill he tutored UNC’s most prolific tacklers, including Durell Mapp, who came into Carolina on a walk-on. He ended up with the second-highest number of defensive tackles of the ACC and is now playing for Green Bay Packers. On February 15, 2009, Gene Chizik announced Thigpen had been hired as the safeties coach at Auburn University. He will split responsibilities coaching the Tigers secondary with Phillip Lolley who was promoted to cornerbacks coach. After three season coaching the safeties, Thigpen took over as linebackers coach for the 2012 season.

Thigpen was first introduced to coaching an UNC graduate assistant between 1998 and 1999 in the direction of Carl Torbush. He was offered his first full- time job the following season as a linebacker coach in Tennessee State. In 2001 and 2002, he was recruited by the new Head Coach Urban Meyer as the cornerbacks coordinator and special teams coach for Bowling Green where he helped coach one of the top Mid-American Conference defenses and was the top team in to the top of MAC in turnover margins in 2002. BGSU was also ranked 2nd in MAC in defense efficiency against passes as well as his special teams were equally remarkable, preventing seven field goals and making one punt.
