Thomas J. Spaulding Jr. was born in Suffern, New York and was a student at Suffern High School. He graduated with the rank of Eagle Scout and senior class president. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Department of Political Science from East Carolina University (ECU) in 1992. In 1992, at ECU Tommy was named the senior class president, and was also the president of 12 different groups and was invited to address graduation. In his graduation, he was awarded an award called the Most Outstanding Leader award and in 2006, he was awarded an Outstanding Alumni Award, the most prestigious honor awarded by the East Carolina alumnus. In the following years, he earned an MBA in Business Administration from Bond University, where he was an Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar in 1998. He then earned an MA in Management of Nonprofits at Regis University in 2005 where He was an Colorado Trust Fellow.

After finishing his studies at East Carolina, Spaulding became the Business Partner Sales Manager at IBM/Lotus Development and a member of the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) program. He was part of the JET staff for in 1998’s Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. Spaulding was also an U.S. Congressional Intern and part of Bob Dole’s presidential campaign of 1996. After his involvement in his campaign Spaulding appointed Director of Corporate Affiliates at Up with People.
