Berntsen started his football career with Valerenga but was not able to make it into the first team. He spent the next years in lower divisions, with the local club Lorenskog IF and Skjetten SK. The breakthrough was made in 1998 when he joined for Lillestrom in Norway, where he and his co-player Torgeir Bjarmann formed one of the top central defenses of the Norwegian Tippeligaen (Premier Division).
