Van der Leegte made his debut as a 17-year old for PSV. He was part of the Dutch team at the 1995 FIFA World Youth Championship. After two seasons with PSV the club loaned him for a season to RKC Waalwijk. After one season at Waalwijk the player signed an agreement to the side.
In the 2000-01 season the club sold him for FC Twente for 4 million gulden (approximately EUR1.8 million) which he stayed with for two seasons. In his third season with the club, he went on an opportunity to loan for the second time to RKC Waalwijk where he finished the season. In 2003’s summer, the club signed him to a contract with ADO Den Haag. In the first half of the 2005-06 campaign , he signed a contract with VfL Wolfsburg. As for his teammates in VfL Wolfsburg, his fellow Dutch included Kevin Hofland and Rick Hoogendorp.
