Berni was traded to Lazio in mid-2006 , on an interim deal after Ternana was forced to drop to 2006-07 Serie C1. In January, just before the closing of the transfer window, Lazio bought his full ownership for EUR1.5 million from Ternana the following day, because Lazio required a replacement goalie because of Angelo Peruzzi set to leave and Marco Ballotta’s declining years. He signed a deal with Lazio that ran until June 2011.
On 29 June 2011, Portuguese club S.C. Braga signed Berni on a free transfer.
On 24 August 2012, Berni joined Serie A club Sampdoria after one season at Braga.

Berni began his career at Fiorentina. In 1998 the club was recruited by Inter Milan. He was a goalie backup for Inter Milan’s Primavera Youth team of the year 2001 Torneo di Viareggio. Marco Varaldi was the starting goalie.
Berni was capped by Berni has been capped by Italian youth teams, starting at the age of 16 to the U21 team and was runner-up for his Italian U20 team in the Toulon Tournament in 2002 and 2003. When Juan Pablo Carrizo was signed by Lazio in June 2008, Berni was loaned to Salernitana of Serie B to seek first team football in February 2009. Since arrived at Salernitana, he displaced Salvatore Pinna to the bench.
