Butina joined the Dinamo Zagreb senior squad in the inaugural season of Prva HNL. He made his debut for Dinamo Zagreb on the 23rd of May 1993. Because of Drazen Ladic’s indisputable position goalkeeper who was the first choice of the club, Butina was sent on loans to smaller Prva HNL clubs. Then, he had long-term loan periods for Karlovac, Samobor and Slaven Belupo. Then he returned with Dinamo in 1997 and made six league appearances both in the 1999-2000 and 1997-98 winning campaigns. He was also the goalkeeper of the club’s first choice following Ladic’s retirement from the club in 2000. In the following three seasons, Butina was a regular as a member of the Dinamo Zagreb first team, having an average of 90 league appearances while also taking home two Croatian Cups with the club. The 2002-03 season was a great one for him. Butina was a part of every one of Dinamo Zagreb’s league games and scored just 27 goals which helped the club win its first title since. On the 26th of February, 2002 Butina had been stripped of capital after breaking the silence in the media about the current problems with the club’s finances. On June 13, 2003 Butina had been transferred to Belgian First Division side Club Brugge.

Butina started his career at Dinamo Zagreb, debuting for the first team on the 23rd of May 1993 at a time when the club was called “Croatia Zagreb”. But he was unable to establish himself as a player in the club at a period the time Drazen Ladic served as the long-time club’s first choice goalkeeper. In the late 1990s the player had a few loans with lower-level Croatian teams Karlovac, Samobor and Slaven Belupo. In the later 1990s the player was a regular player in the team, and, after Ladic’s retirement in 2000, he was appointed as Dinamo’s primary goalie during the 2000-01 season.

Internationally, Butina represented Croatia at the under-20 and under-21 levels in 1994 and 1995, making a total of twelve appearances at youth levels. On 5 September 2001, he made his full international debut in a 2002 World Cup qualifier against San Marino. He went on to appear in all of Croatia’s three matches at the Euro 2004 finals, and kept his place as the national team’s first-choice goalkeeper over the following 18 months. He was also part of Croatia’s 23-man squads for the 2002 and 2006 World Cup finals, but did not feature in any of the team’s six matches during the two tournaments. In August 2006, he announced his retirement from the national team.
