According to his remarks in a variety of interviews, he became fascinated by photography in his early childhood because of his maternal uncle, who was a serious amateur photographer and self-proclaimed journalist of his hometown. However, Gudzowaty originally set out to become an attorney, and earned an master’s degree at his Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Warsaw. Afterward, however, Gudzowaty returned his profession, and began to take up photography full-time.

As a tribute to his accomplishments, Gudzowaty received high honors from both national and state organisations in Poland and abroad, among them his Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta which was presented to the president of Poland in 2000. The Award in Visual Arts from the Polish Society of Authors and Composers ZAIKS in 2012 as well as the Gold Olympic Laurel in Photography from the Polish Olympic Committee in 2013. Gudzowaty is the son of a businessman and Philanthropist Aleksander Gudzowaty. The couple is Melody Gudzowaty, who excelled in numerous beauty contests – Miss Islas Baleares 2008 (winner), Reina Hispanoamericana 2009 (second second), Miss Dominican Republic International 2012 (winner), Miss International 2012 (third third place) and is currently working together on an important artwork project titled “Planets Alive”.

In 2007 Gudzowaty started to use a large format camera (Linhof Master Technika) for his projects, almost completely abandoning 35mm SLR. The change had a direct impact on his style, favoring even more elaborated composition and playing with a shallow depth of focus. He has also tended to include more portraits in his subsequent projects. Portraiture has become a strong strand in his art, a fact that has been reflected in his newer achievements in such competitions as The Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize awarded by the National Gallery London, or Spider Black And White Photo Awards.

In 2009 Gudzowaty’s photographs were shown at Rencontres d’Arles festival as part of the joint exhibition “Ça me touche” curated by Nan Goldin.

Gudzowaty was recognized as a photojournalist during the Summer Paralympic Games in 2000 in Sydney and also in the year 2004 Athens. In 2003, he was among the winners of World Press Photo. World Press Photo with a photograph of the Gongfu monks of the Shaolin Temple, China that made him switch to sports photography over the next decade. Many of his accomplishments in photography shows (World Press Photo, Pictures of the Year, Best of Photojournalism, Polish Grand Press Photo) were in sports-related categories. He was particularly interested in ethnic sports and other sports that were not mainstream as he continued to develop an ongoing project under the title “Sports Features”, later changed to “Beyond the Body”. The project was featured in a number of magazines (among other publications: L’Equipe, Newsweek, Forbes, Time, Photo, GQ, The Guardian, National Geographic Traveler, British Journal of Photography, Red Bull magazine), and also in shows in galleries all over the world like Maison de Photographie in Lille, France, Bulger Gallery in Toronto, Canada, Kontrast Gallery in Stockholm, Sweden, Ethnographic Museum in Budapest, Hungary, Gallery Speak For in Tokyo, Japan, to only a handful of.

Tomasz Gudzowaty (born 1971) is a Polish documentary filmmaker, portrait , and art photographer who has gained international recognition from many awards and publications particularly in World Press Photo in which he was successful nine times. He is also a frequent finalist or winner of various competitions, including Pictures of the Year International, the NPPA’s Best of Photojournalism, International Photography Awards, B&W Spider Awards and the The National Portrait Gallery’s Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize.

Gudzowaty was awarded many prizes in the Polish Press Photography Contest (Krajowy Konkurs Fotografii Prasowej) and travelled extensively throughout Africa as well as Asia. His breakthrough in the world of photography was in 1999 when he won his First Prize in Nature-singles category in the World Press Photo competition for an image of young cheetahs shortly prior to killing the first predator. The image, called First lesson in killing has become a symbol of the times and was incorporated into stamps for postal mail and schoolbooks. Gudzowaty established his place in the field of nature photography when he won two more prizes in the World Press Photo category in 2000. In 2000, Gudzowaty was among the very rare photographers of Eastern Europe to win this very coveted contest. Black and white photographs depicting African wildlife were published in Polish or international newspapers, like Max magazine (German edition) and the highly regarded Cartier Art magazine. The images were also featured in Nikon Photo Gallery in Zurich, Switzerland, and in an exhibition that traveled in Polish cities. After some time off his return to photography of nature in 2008, with an assignment on Antarctic penguins known as the emperors. During that period, he also undertook several photojournalism projects documenting social and environmental issues, the most known of them being a photo story on workers in the ship-breaking yards in Chittagong, Bangladesh.
