Tupa was signed by his team the New England Patriots in 1996 and was a part of them for three seasons. While with the Patriots period, he was a player in Super Bowl XXXI where the Patriots were defeated by the Green Bay Packers. He was called the Patriots All-Nineties Team.
The final pass of Tupa’s career was thrown in an overtime loss in the 2002 season-opener against the New Orleans Saints during a punt attempt from the Buccaneers’ five-yard line. Pressure from a Saints defender forced Tupa to abort the punt attempt and throw a desperation pass with his non-throwing arm which was intercepted by a Saints defender and returned for a touchdown, ending the game.
2002 saw Tupa sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he was their punter on their road to Super Bowl XXXVII, where they defeated the Oakland Raiders. Before the start of the 2004 NFL season, Tupa signed with the Washington Redskins. In 2004, he was named as a Pro Bowl second alternate. He spent 2005 on the injured reserve list, and did not appear in a game.
The season also marked the final time Tupa was employed regularly as a quarterback. Since then , he has almost exclusively punted in the emergency situations or games that made usage of his throwing abilities. Tupa was not a player during the 1993 NFL season. He was removed off by the Cleveland Browns right before the season, and then re-signed as a backup due to an injury to quarterback Vinny Testaverde as well as the demotion from the backup quarterback Bernie Kosar. Tupa was re-signed by the Browns the following year , and was there for two years as the starter punter. As part of his team, the Browns, Tupa scored the first two-point conversion in NFL history. He ran in an unintentional extra point kick for the Browns during a match with their rivals the Cincinnati Bengals in the first week of the 1994 season. He was able to score three of these conversions during the season and earned him the moniker “Two Point Tupa.”

After three years of being a step in the shadow of Mike Tomczak and Jim Karsatos, Tupa took over the starting quarterback position in the football team at The Ohio State University in 1987. He was able to throw for 2252 yards as well as 15 touchdowns and twelve interceptions. He was named an All- American punter that same year, as well in the All-Big 10. Tupa was a four- time letterman in football and was also chosen to participate at the 1988 Hula Bowl all-star game.
Tupa was selected at the end of the third selection (68th first overall) from the 1988 NFL Draft by the Phoenix Cardinals. The first season of his rookie career Tupa was only used as a quarterback. He played in two games and throwing four-of-five passing to 49 yards. The second year with the team saw him play a more expansive role. He played in two games as quarterback, and tallied six punts and 46.7 yards for each punt. After spending the whole 1990 season as only an holder of kicks, he became the primary quarterback of the Cardinals in the following season playing across 11 contests and throwing six touchdowns, compared to 13 interceptions. Then, he joined with the Indianapolis Colts in 1992, serving in the role of a back-up quarterback Jack Trudeau and Jeff George.
In 1999, Tupa signed with the New York Jets. It was during this season that Tupa received his first invitation to the Pro Bowl. He also made his first pass attempt since 1996, and went 6-of-11 for 165 yards and two touchdowns during the Jets’ week one matchup against his former team, the Patriots. Tupa was put in at quarterback in the first quarter after Vinny Testaverde tore his achilles tendon. Despite his success, the Jets lost the game to the Patriots. He remained with the Jets through the 2001 season.
