McKean born in Bellshill, North Lanarkshire, was among the favorites at during the 1987 World Championships in Athletics 800 meters. But he slid into the feet of Stephen Ole Marai in the final and sustained an injury that led to him finishing last. In the initial round of qualification for 1990 World Championships in Athletics 800 meters, he stopped way too fast before crossing the start of the line. He finished third and did not be able to qualify. Two athletes before him included Gold as well as Bronze winners Billy Konchellah and Mark Everett. McKean also took home the silver medal at his 1986 European Championships in Athletics 800m split by British teammates Sebastian Coe and Steve Cram the event was remarked by Ian Wooldridge as being “like three Spitfires coming out of the sun”. McKean set his personal best time in London in 1989 with 1:43.88 minutes.
McKean was a representative for Scotland during Commonwealth Games events. He won the silver award in two occasions. The second one occurred in 1990 in which he participated in the four-man team of 400 meters for Scotland together with Brian Whittle a teammate.
