Aune was then transferred to Sogndal and played in 19 games for Tippeligaen the year 1994 before the team was cut from the league. He was a player for Sogndal until the end of August 1995 after which he returned to his home team Fredrikstad. He continued to play for four years with Fredrikstad and then moved to local rivals Sarpsborg which he played for for two seasons before retiring.
As a player, Aune was a part of Fredrikstad in the second and third divisions from 1990 until 1999, only separated by two seasons with Sogndal and Sogndal, in which he made 19 appearances for Tippeligaen in 1994.

Aune was a debutant with Lisleby’s first team in the year 1988 in 1988, and the following year Aune scored 22 goals with the club that was playing in the fourth tier.
Prior to the start of the 1990 season Aune moved from Fredrikstad FK. The club was at the time in the second division as well. Aune played a consistent player with the club. In 1991 Aune scored nine goals and was the team’s second-highest goalscorer. He was only defeated by Stian Solberg who scored 10 goals. In 1992, Fredrikstad was dropped to the third tier of the league for only the second time in club’s history. There were many players who quit the club, however Aune continued to play for the remainder of the year. Fredrikstad was second in 1993’s Second Division, and Aune was the top goal scorer of the team with the score of ten goals.
After his retirement, Aune worked several years as a teacher in high school. He was hired as youth coach in Fredrikstad in 2002, but after one year he quit the job because FFK wanted Aune to work full-time as youth coach while Aune wanted to still be a teacher. After one year as head coach in his youth-club Lisleby, and one year as head coach in Kvik Halden, Aune was again hired as youth-coach in Fredrikstad in October 2004. When Anders Grönhagen was signed as head coach of Fredrikstad, Per Morten Haugen and Aune become assistant coaches. Aune quit his job as a teacher in 2008, and during the 2009-season he stepped in temporarily as head coach when Grönhagen was on a sick leave. Ahead of the 2010-season Aune was appointed as the new head coach of Fredrikstad, and during his first season the club won promotion to Tippeligaen after beating Hønefoss in the promotion-playoff.
