Calma is the first Indigenous male to hold the position of Chancellor of an Australian university. Pat O’Shane was the first female.

In 2008, Calma delivered the formal response to the Government’s National Apology to the Stolen Generations and since 2009 has been involved with the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation (ALNF) and he currently holds the post of Co-Chair.

Calma was Aboriginal as well as Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner of the Australian Human Rights Commission from 2004 until 2010 and also as the Race Discrimination Commissioner from 2004 until the year 2009. In this period, the Social Justice Report 2005 called for Australian governments to take a stand on attaining the equality of Aboriginal as well as Torres Strait Islander people in the fields of life expectancy and health within the next Generation (25 year olds) and advocated for the incorporation of social determinants in public policies on health and education, employment, accommodation and behavior in order to reduce Indigenous gaps in inequality. This report laid the basis to the Close the Gap campaign, comprised of more than 40 Indigenous as well as non-Indigenous Australian Human rights and health bodies and organizations. Calma created the Close the Gap Steering Committee for Indigenous Health Equality in 2006 and was the first Chairperson. He resigned as Co-Chair of the Steering Committee in 2010.

Thomas Edwin Calma, AO (born 27 December 1953) is a prominent Aboriginal Australian human rights and social justice advocate. The sixth chancellor is at the University of Canberra, a position he has held since the beginning of January 2014, following two years as the deputy chancellor. Calma was the only Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person to be Chancellor at any Australian university.

Between 1995 and 2002, Calma represented Australia’s interest in education and training as a high-ranking diplomacy official both between 1995 and 2002 in India and Vietnam In 2003, he was appointed Senior Advisor on Indigenous Affairs to Philip Ruddock who was then Secretary for Immigration, Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs.

Among his other roles, he has been a White Ribbon Ambassador since 2005, Patron of Wakakirri since 2009 and Patron of the Media Centre for Education Research Australia (MCERA) since 2018.
