He is a bachelor of Medical Science and pursued a double-degree in surgery and medicine in The University of Notre Dame in Sydney.
The potential of Kane was discovered when he was skiing in Smiggin Holes, New South Wales, and Kane was invited to be part of his team for the Australian Winter Paralympic Development team at the age of 11. At 19 Kane was the youngest athlete on the Australian team during the in the 2006 Winter Paralympics in Torino. The classification was LW2 He won an Olympic bronze medal during the super G and emerged in the wake of the legendary Australian Le2 Alpine Skier Michael Milton. He also took part in the downhill, finishing 9th, the slalom coming 16th; and the massive Slalom, which he failed to finish.
Kane announced his retirement following the 2014 Paralympics, with the intent to pursue a career in medicine.
Kane competed in five events at the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, winning a bronze medal in the men’s super G behind Russia’s Alexey Bugaev and Austria’s Matthias Lanzinger. It was Australia’s first medal at the Sochi Games. On winning his bronze medal, he announced that he would retire at the conclusion of the Games, ending his career on a high note. He went on to finish fourth in the men’s slalom standing and sixth in the men’s downhill standing, and failed to finish in two events. Towards the end of the Games, Kane and Dutch snowboarder Bibian Mentel-Spee were named winners of the Whang Youn Dai Achievement Award, which is presented at every Paralympic Games for outstanding performances and overcoming adversity.
Kane was awarded the bronze medal in the supermen’s men’s G LW2 race at the 2004 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships in Wildschonau, Austria. After a brief break from sports and a break from skiing, he took to the slopes for the 2010 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships in Sestriere, Italy, where the bronze medal was awarded in the slalom, after having a string of disappointing fourth-place finishes in super G, downhill and super-combined. In this year’s IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup season, he took home another bronze medal in the giant slalom. Also, in the 2012/13 season, took home a gold medal and two silvers, as well as an award of bronze during the 2012 North America Cup. Then he won silver in the giant slalom of the World Cup series.
