Tobias Kratzer (born 17 January 1980) is a German stage director, particularly of opera. He has been working internationally since winning a contest at Graz by submitting two performances in the year 2008. He has staged operas composed by Verdi and Wagner as well as contemporary music. He was Wagner’s director for Tannhauser in at the 2019 Bayreuth Festival.

His production of the Lehar play Die Csardasfurstin at the Stadttheater Klagenfurt was nominated to this year’s Osterreichischer Musiktheaterpreis [de within the category “Beste Regie” (Best staging). The Wagner production he staged at the Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe was nominated for the prize Der Faust. In 2018, he staged a new production of Meyerbeer’s L’Africaine – Vasco da Gama at the Oper Frankfurt as an interstellar drama of colonialism (“interstellares Kolonialismusdrama”). Directed by Antonello Manacorda and featuring Michael Spyres, Claudia Mahnke and Kirsten MacKinnon, who played the lead roles The story was told in a blend of acting out the characters, dreamy images, and Klang theorizing (“Personenregie, Bildvision und Klangzauber”).
