She then earned her bachelor’s BS degrees from the Department of Biology in Biology at Harvard University. She earned the Ph.D. degree in 1984 from Harvard Medical School in Genetics after which, following a brief time in Stanford Medical School with David Hogness who was her mentor, she established an institute of research that was non-profit located in Cheshire, Connecticut, called the Station for Natural Studies Inc. The institute received grants through the Whitehall Foundation and the Helen Hay Whitney Foundation. She was also affiliated to nearby Yale University during this time.
Since the year 1980 since 1980, Dr. Wu’s work has been concentrated on the role played by the chromosomes’ behavior in inheritance as well as gene activity, focusing on the many phenomena where homology between chromosomes plays an important part. She invented”homology effects,” a term she coined to define “homology effects” to highlight the effects of homology. Her research has focused on transvection as well as the zeste gene the chromosome-to- chromosome pairing process, as well as Polycomb genes and chromatin remodelling. She also has uncovered the mechanisms that bridge enhancer and promoter elements inside and between the chromosomes.
Wu was one of ten people in the US to receive the National Institutes of Health Director’s Pioneer Award in 2012. She has also received awards for teaching and mentoring at Harvard University and Harvard Medical School.
