Bara was born in the outskirts of Berlin Bara was born just outside Berlin, but was raised in Guben and later on the territory that had, until 1945 been border to Germany’s German Democratic Republic with Poland.

Bara’s own method of photography where she captures the female body at close proximity conveys a sense of social discomfort. This was captured in her 1988 work o.T. (Untitled) with 14 parts. Bara’s political and critical awareness was formed through her involvement in Frauen for Frieden and further was explored through her autobiographical photographs that revealed her perception of herself as well as the universe was mirror-like. In 2009, she stated that “My female gaze arose from my biography and from my personal search for identity. A distancing feminist self-assertion was not our thing.”

in 1986 Bara began a photography correspondence program at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig. It was an era of instability in the German Democratic Republic and she ended the program in 1989 without being able to being awarded a certificate. Instead, in July of 1989 just before the fall of the Berlin wall was toppled, that she could emigrate via”the “Inner frontier” and relocated to West Berlin, where she began a new career as an artist- photographer freelancer and also worked on documentaries made with video.

Tina Bara (born 18 March 1962 from Kleinmachnow) is a German photographer who started her professional career during her home country of the German Democratic Republic

After 1980, the artist relocated back to Berlin in 1980, and from the year 1980 until 1986, she was a student at in the Humboldt University of Berlin, where she studied history as well as art the history of art. While an undergraduate she was involved with opposition political groups, such as Frauen fur den Frieden (Women for Peace). (The German Democratic Republic was hosting over 300.000 Soviet soldiers at that time.) While at the university, Bara presented her first exhibit within the local Public Arts House at Berlin- Treptow. In 1986, she was accepted into in the East German League of Image Artists as a photographer freelance. In this period her assignments included work with documentary movies produced by DEFA which is the government-owned film production company and flustern and the SCHREIEN film The film was Ein Rockreport, a major documentary that ran for three years and led by Dieter Schumann.

In 1991, she received, belatedly, a diploma with de:Arno Fischer (Fotograf)Arno Fischer from the Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts where, since 1993, she has held a professorship in photography.
