Timothy Brook is one of the most popular and richest Canadian historian who was born on January 6, 1951 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. His research interests are in the cultural and social history of the Ming Dynasty in China; laws and punishments in Imperial China; collaboration during Japan’s occupation of wartime China between 1937 and 1945, as well as the trials for war crimes in Asia and the world; and historiography.
From 1984 to 1986 Brook was an MacTaggart Fellow in the University of Alberta; from 1986-97 , he moved from Assistant Professor to Full Professor of the University of Toronto; from 1997 to 1999 he was Professor of History in Stanford University, and 1999-2004 he was Professor of History at the University of Toronto, and Shaw Professor of Chinese at the University of Oxford. Brook joined the University of British Columbia in 2004 and was the Principal, St. John’s College between 2004 and 2009. He also is the an Academic Director for the Contemporary Tibetan Studies Program at the University of British Columbia’s Institute of Asian Research. He was elected as President of the Association for Asian Studies 2015.
In 2009, Vermeer’s Hat won Brook the Mark Lynton History Prize from Columbia University in New York, worth $10,000 (U.S.). The prize is one of the Lukas Prize Project awards. The book was described as a “bold, original and compulsively readable work of history.”

After having graduated of the University of Toronto Schools, Brook earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature from the University of Toronto in 1973 followed by a master’s in Regional Studies East Asia at Harvard University in 1977, and in 1984 earned the Ph.D. of History as well as East Asian Languages at Harvard University in which the advisor on his dissertation was Philip A. Kuhn .
