Gottschalk decided not to go back in Dakar. Gottschalk was back in Dakar in 2013 with Carlos Sainz in the new Qatar Red Bull team, winning the first section of the race however, the team were unable to finish their race due to engine issues during the sixth stage stopped their progress.

Gottschalk began his career at his first Dakar Rally as navigator to his compatriot Dieter Depping. They competed in the Truck category, with the team placing 26th. The following year’s Dakar Rally was postponed, however Depping and Gottschalk were able to secure in a respectable third overall , in the auto class of the new Central Europe Rally, driving the factory Volkswagen Touareg. Depping as well as Gottschalk continued to drive their factory Volkswagen team in Dakar Rally’s debut tour in South America in 2009 finished in sixth place overall, although they were nine hours slower than their teammates who won the race Giniel de Villiers and Dirk von Zitzewitz.
Gottschalk was then joined by Nasser Al-Attiyah to compete in the 2010 race, and the duo won four stages with each other to finish runners-up to Volkswagen teammates Carlos Sainz and Lucas Cruz who were just two minutes slower than the time of victory. Gottschalk along with Al-Attiyah were back for 2011 as the leaders of the rally after winning on the 8th stage. The problems faced by Sainz and Cruz in the 11th stage gave Gottschalk and Al-Attiyah an advantage of more than 50 minutes which they were able to keep until the conclusion of the event.
