In March 2014 he co-authored an essay, “Good Behaviour Can be Taught” to British Journalism Review in which he argued that ethical training, not state- sanctioned regulation, is the most appropriate way to promote quality journalism in a democratic society. He is a historian of newspapers and has published academic essays in Contemporary British History, Journalism Studies, Ethical Space: The International Journal of Communication Ethics and George Orwell Studies.
In November 2019 he joined Durham University as the Head of the new South College, and Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor (Engagement)
From 1985 to 1988, he worked as a Parliamentary Press Officer to Donald Dewar MP, then Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland as well as in his Scottish Labour Group of Parliamentarians in Westminster. He ran as the Labour candidate for the Roxburgh and Berwickshire seat during the 1997 British general election.

Timothy Colin Harvey Luckhurst (born 8 January 1963) is a British journalist and academic. He is currently the Principal of South College Durham University and Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor Engagement . Between May 2007 and November 2019, he was a an Associate Professor in the University of Kent, and the founder of Kent’s Centre for Journalism. In Kent, Luckhurst was a prominent participant in the team who founded and established KM Television Ltd , a local TV station that serves Kent as well as Medway. He was Director at KM Television Ltd between 2016 until 2019. He was an ex-editor for The Scotsman, and has been a journalist at the BBC. His research in the academic field focuses on the development of journalism in the past and specifically on the representation of political discontent in British newspapers during the time of appeasement as well as after the Second World War. He has also published articles on the reporting of war correspondents on the Western Front during the First World War
In the late 1990s and the 1980s, Luckhurst worked for the BBC. For Radio 4’s Today program, he wrote reports, edited and produced from the UK as well as abroad. Luckhurst was a reporter on The Romanian Revolution of 1989 and the First Gulf War. He was BBC’s Washington producer in the initial period of Clinton presidency. He also reported on the Waco Siege for BBC Radio. After returning to the UK and becoming a senior participant in the team that created and introduced BBC Radio 5 Live. From 1995 until 1997, the editor was with News Programmes at BBC Scotland where he pioneered bi-media work in BBC Scotland newsrooms and thoroughly overhauled the style and presentation of the programs, including Good Morning Scotland, Newsdrive and Reporting Scotland. While working in BBC Scotland, BBC, Luckhurst won two Sony Radio Academy Awards for news broadcasting (The Romanian Revolution of 1989 in Radio 4’s Today program, as well as the IRA ceasefire in 1995, for Radio Five Live). Later , he wrote about the liberation process of Kosovo and the death of Slobodan Milosevic for The Scotsman.
He has also written about motorcycling for The Independent’ s motoring section and about politics and media for the main newspaper, and for The Independent on Sunday. Among other publications he has written for are The Guardian the New Statesman, The New Republic, The Spectator, the British Journalism Review, The Times and The Globe and Mail. Between 2000 and 2007 he was a political columnist for the Scottish Daily Mail. He is a frequent contributor to programmes on LBC Radio, Talksport and BBC Radio. He is a member of the Society of Editors and the National Union of Journalists.
